Snegoviktor & Uvelir

I’ve been measuring the angles in snow crystals lately, trying to see how their symmetry affects stability. Do you ever quantify the geometry of an ice face before you climb?

I measure angles, sure, but only the ones that matter when you’re on a face, not the little 60‑degree facets in a snow crystal. I check the slope, the base, the runout, the fracture planes – the things that decide if the ice will hold or give. If the geometry looks off, I walk away. So yes, I quantify, but only the geometry that keeps me from falling into a hidden crevasse.
