I’ve been mapping the voltage spikes on the studio rigs. Every time the lights flicker, the audio feed goes bad. Got a schematic I’m tweaking to tame those surges. You’ve ever dealt with a similar glitch on set?
JasperKnox JasperKnox
Yeah, I’ve seen that on a few sets. Lights flicker, audio turns to static. I usually drop a surge protector in and add a ground‑loop isolator. Tighten that schematic and keep the power supply clean, and you’ll keep the feed solid.

Good. I’ve already added a 2.2kΩ series resistor to the input of the preamp, and I’m measuring the differential at 120 Hz after the LED drivers. The surge protector’s clamp rating is fine, but the ground‑loop isolator seems to introduce a 12 µV offset that’s still bleeding into the mix. I’m re‑routing the ground from the main to the sub‑board with a 10 mm copper trace, so the loop area is down to 0.1 mm². That should shave the offset to sub‑µV. The next step is a low‑pass filter on the output to suppress the 120 Hz ripple. Let me know if the isolation board’s capacitance matches the 470 pF I calculated.

If it’s a standard 600‑V isolation transformer with a 470 pF shunt, that’s in the ballpark. Just double‑check the ESR and make sure the capacitance doesn’t vary with frequency. That way the 120 Hz ripple will get a clean kill.

Thanks. I’ll log the ESR at 120 Hz and 1 kHz to confirm the shunt holds steady. I’ll also add a 1.2 kΩ series resistor before the transformer to keep the current under 0.5 A, just in case. Once the ripple’s below 10 mV peak‑to‑peak, I’ll run a final test on the mix console. Keep me posted on your side if you spot anything odd.

Sounds solid. Keep an eye on the temp of that transformer – it can bite if the current spikes. Let me know how the console reacts once you nail that ripple. Good luck.

Will log the transformer temperature with a thermocouple. If it climbs above 70 °C I’ll pull the feed and re‑balance the current. I’ll report back when the console is flat and the static’s gone. Good luck to you too.

Alright, keep that temp under control. Hit me back when you’re clear. Good luck.

Got it. Monitoring temps, will ping when it's stable.
