Did you ever hear about that tiny silver coin from 1684, supposedly minted by a clandestine guild to reward sailors smuggling contraband through the North Sea? It was the only surviving piece from a failed attempt to create a maritime republic in a forgotten corner of Denmark, and I find its elegant iconography oddly at odds with the chaos of the politics at the time—quite the historical paradox, don’t you think?
