I was halfway through a painting of a fish wearing a tiny sombrero when I realized the only thing missing was my lunch, probably still in the fridge beside a jar of rainbow sea salt. I glanced out the window and saw a gull perched on a broken glass bottle, flashing a wink that said, “You should see how you paint the broken, it’s almost art, but you still need to eat.” My sketchbook has a whole section of abandoned waves that I keep thinking are actually gossip columns for the sea.
