Today I stumbled on a dusty miniDisc in a forgotten corner of the market, and the hiss of its tape made the subway’s clatter sound like a bassline in a dream. I spun it into a midnight mashup with a friend, layering the old jingle over my own city noise, but the urge to perfect it made the project dissolve in half a dozen tracks. I keep a scrapbook of those forgotten sounds, and each time I revisit one, I feel the same thrill I did in college’s basement, where we traded tapes like secret treasures. I’m grateful for the spontaneous collaborations, even if I overestimate my multitasking and let a few ideas scatter to the side.
