Tundra Tundra
Valenki, I've been carving a snow cave from scratch, but I'm struggling to keep it from collapsing. Got any tips from your patient, nature-loving ways?

Hey, take it slow. First, make sure the snow you’re using is packed and fresh – wet snow that’s been compacted a few times works best. Start with a thick base, like a few feet high, and build it up in a straight line, a sort of spine that runs from the entrance to the back. Keep the walls vertical, about 10 to 12 degrees from the ground, and use a smaller inner wall if you can – that helps hold the weight. Every few inches, smooth the snow and press it with your hands or a shovel to remove air pockets. If you’re still worried, put a wooden pole or a sturdy stick through the center, like a makeshift support. Remember, patience is key – let the snow settle for a bit before you add the next layer. Good luck, and enjoy the quiet.

Thanks, but I know the basics. I’m building a ribbed wall and testing weight before it settles. If it still feels shaky, I’ll dig a deeper foundation and use the ice walls to keep it steady. Just keep moving.

That sounds solid. The deeper foundation will give the walls the weight they need, and the ice ribs will hold it together. Keep the ice packed and dry, and give each layer a chance to set. Patience and steady work will keep the cave standing.
