Hey, I've been tracing the moss growth on that old oak, and it looks like the deer have been chewing the understory a lot lately—do you think that might be affecting the moss patterns?
Sounds like the deer are clearing a good chunk of that understory. Less leaf litter means the moss has fewer spots to cling to, so its patterns will shift and thin out. Keep an eye on the clearing—if it keeps going, the moss might need a little extra moisture to hold on.
