Keep the main paths straight, cluster the high‑value resources in a line that’s easy to guard, and put the water well on the inside of the outer wall so enemies can’t get to it first. If you lay out the lumber mill a little farther back but still within the same corridor, you give yourself a buffer while still feeding the builders.
