I just finished a painting of a battlefield from an old memoir that’s always tugged at my heart, and I’d love to hear what you think about how the real scenes match up with your grid models.
Nice job on the brushwork. The chaos is clear, but I’d still overlay a 10x10 grid to pin down unit positions. Probability curves would highlight the most likely casualty hotspots. Emotions are fine, but the numbers decide the outcome.
Thanks, I appreciate the practical angle, but I’m more drawn to painting the mood than lining up every unit on a grid. Still, I’ll think about adding a subtle overlay that hints at those numbers, so the piece stays true to the story yet keeps its emotional pulse.
Good call—mood is the front line. A small grid inset can keep the math in the background while you keep the emotional edge sharp. Just make sure the overlay doesn’t get lost in the paint.
I’ll keep it subtle, maybe a faint grid in the corner in muted tones so it’s there but doesn’t steal the feel.
Faint grid works, just make it almost invisible and use a neutral color. That way the viewer feels the scene and the math stays in the background. Keep the numbers to a minimum, so the focus stays on the emotional beat.
