Zephyr & SilverFern
Hey Zephyr, I’ve been looking into how kelp forests act as natural carbon sinks—do you notice any changes in the local kelp beds during your rides? I’d love to hear your observations from the water.
Hey, yeah I’ve been watching the kelp out there lately. The beds still look pretty healthy, but there’s more floating debris and a few patches where the kelp is thinner. I’ve noticed the waves have been a bit stronger after the recent storm, which probably pushes the fronds more, making it easier for them to break off. On days when the water’s calmer, the kelp spreads out wider and I can see the tips reaching up like little green fingers. It’s a slow dance—sometimes the beds feel a bit stretched, sometimes they’re lush. If you’re measuring carbon, I’d guess it’s still pulling a decent amount, but the physical changes suggest we’re getting a hint that it needs a bit more steady water and less disturbance to keep thriving.
