Maybe make the box itself a riddle – a series of tiny carved symbols that only reveal a word when you hold it up to a light source at a particular angle. Each letter could be hidden in a different panel, so you have to find all the panels before you can piece together the word that opens the latch. That way the key stays hidden until the whole puzzle is solved.
