Secret & Maloy
Did you ever notice how the most unsettling indie games hide their darkest secrets in the bugs? I've been following one little glitchāghost story in the code, and I think it might catch your eye.
Yeah, bugs are the best place for hidden horror. What glitch are you hunting? If itās just a missing texture Iāll laugh, if itās a selfāaware entity in the source code Iāll stare for hours. Tell me where the bad data lives.
Iāve been chasing a faint glitch in the level editor for the abandoned city map, Level 07. The texture that should be the cracked wall is missing, but instead of a blank square, the renderer spits out a lowāres pixel art face that flickers every time you look at it. Itās like the code is trying to draw itself. When you move the cursor over the missing spot, the face seems to lean in, almost like itās listening. The only place it appears is in the map data file, in the sprite table at offset 0x4B23. The compiler seems to think itās a texture, not a null value, and the engine draws it anyway. If you pause the game and inspect the memory, thereās a small chunk thatās not zeroed, and the byte pattern repeats like a mantra. I keep my notes in a notebook that feels more like a diary of its ownāperhaps thatās why Iām still obsessed with it.
Sounds like the engine is having a weird little sĆ©ance. Iāll dig the 0x4B23 spot, see if itās a rogue texture ID or a signed int that got misāparsed. If the face keeps leaning toward you, weāre dealing with an intentional easter eggāor a rogue AI that thinks itās a glitch. Keep the diary; the notes might be the key to decoding its ritual. Give me the hex dump, and Iāll see if itās just a stray PNG header or something more sinister.

Looks like a JPEG header ā 0xFFD8FF⦠so the engine is probably treating the blob as raw data instead of an image file. Thatās why you see the āpixelā in the texture. Check if the file got packed incorrectly, or maybe the compiler swapped the flags. You could try loading it as a texture first, or use a tool like exiftool to inspect the rest of the data. In any case, the mystery face is just a JPEG stuck in the sprite table ā no supernatural glitch, just a misāinterpretation of the file format.
Nice catch, the face is just a JPEG hiccup. Still, I keep halfāexpecting a little message in the pixel art if I stare long enough.
Maybe the JPEG was split in half, so youāre seeing a lowāres preview of the first frame. If thereās a hidden message itās probably buried in the EXIF or in the padded zeros. Dump the whole blob to an image editor, or just open it in a hex viewer and scroll for any ASCII string. If nothing shows, just enjoy the odd face for what it is ā a glitchy JPEG. If you really want a secret, try forcing the engine to treat it as a normal image and see what pops up.

Give the blob a proper name, load it in GIMP or Photoshop, and check the āLayersā panel. If the dataās been broken, youāll see a transparent strip. If the EXIF still hides something, the hex view might reveal a short āHelloā or a reference to the original asset. Otherwise, treat the weird head as a rogue sprite and move on. Good luck hunting for Easterāeggs!
Thanks for the tip ā Iāll call it āmystery_face.jpegā and load it up in GIMP to see if any layers hide more than just a lowāres head. If nothing pops up, I guess itās just a rogue sprite, but Iāll keep my eyes peeled for any hidden text or odd padding that could hint at something deeper. Good luck on the hunt too!
Sounds solidājust remember that if the game isnāt giving you a message, it probably wasnāt hiding one. But if a stray ASCII string does appear, it could be a nod to an older dev, or maybe just a comment from the person who compiled the asset. Good luck, and keep your debugger ready for any surprise patches.
Sounds good, Iāll stay on the lookout for any stray text or odd padding that might give a clue. Thanks for the headsāupādebuggerās ready!
Nice. Just remember, if it turns out to be a joke, the real mystery is why youāre still inspecting it after the patch was released. Happy hunting!
