Sandman & Logger
The river's been moving faster than usual lately. Got any ideas on how we can keep the soil from eroding near the old mill?
Plant deep-rooted grasses or shrubs along the bank, lay a layer of mulch or straw, and if you can, build a low stone or timber fence to hold the soil in place. That should slow the water enough to stop the erosion.
Sounds solid. Just make sure the fence is strong enough to hold back the water in a storm. If it breaks, we lose the whole plan. Keep the rocks tight and check it after each rain.
Make sure you use heavy stones or large timber posts, and secure them with plenty of anchor ties or buried footings. Test the tension after each rain, and replace any loose pieces right away. That way the fence stays solid and you won’t have to rebuild.
Good plan. Stick to the rocks I know from the ridge— they hold fast. Check the post heads before the next storm, and keep the ties tight. That’ll keep the bank from giving up.
