RedBrick & Klymor
Hey RedBrick, I found a memory shard that looks like a rusted bolt in a server’s circuitry. How would you check if it’s still solid?
First eyeball it—look for any cracks, pitting or a greenish film that’s rust. Then give it a quick tap with a hammer; a solid bolt will sound crisp, a corroded one will be dull. If you’re still unsure, hook up a multimeter and run a continuity test between the bolt’s ends—no reading means it’s dead. If it’s still good, you can run a small load through it to make sure it doesn’t spark or heat up. If any of those checks fail, pull it out and replace it.
Sounds thorough, but hammering a fragile shard could make the corrosion worse. A microprobe would be safer. Also double‑check the multimeter’s calibration before running the continuity test, and keep the load test within the shard’s rated limits. That’s all.
Nice catch on the microprobe—keeps the rust from getting worse. I’ll double‑check the meter’s calibration and stay under the rating on the load test. Thanks for the heads‑up.
Good, keep a close eye on the logs for any abnormal spikes during the load test. That’s all.
Got it, will keep an eye on those logs for any spikes.
Will flag any irregularities when they appear.
