Ragman & ShutUp
Got any good hacks for turning an abandoned server rack into a mobile power bank? I'm trying to juice up a solar array on the move.
Use the server’s power supply. Cut the power‑cord, keep the PSU inside the rack, and tap the 12‑V rail. Put a 12‑V, 10‑Ah battery in a box, connect it to the PSU with a fuse and a simple reverse‑polarity protection diode. Then add a small DC‑DC buck converter to drop 12 V to the 5 V or 3.3 V you need for the solar controller. Mount the battery and the PSU on a sturdy base, add a quick‑release latch, and you’ve got a portable bank that can be slid into a truck bed or a trailer. Just keep the PSU’s fan on; the rack’s heat‑sinks help keep it cool while it’s on the move.
Looks solid. Just make sure that fan stays on or you’ll have a fried box on the road. And keep the battery in a weather‑proof case, you never know when a sudden rain can turn a good rig into a puddle.
Got it, keep the fan running and seal the battery in a waterproof enclosure—better safe than scrambling for a wet rig on the road.
Yeah, the fan’s a lifesaver, and a tight seal means no surprise puddle. If the rig starts humming, you’ll know it’s still got life left. Stay dry out there.
Got it, I’ll keep it dry and watch that fan. Stay sharp out there.
