Need help figuring out the best way to lay a stone wall so it holds up through seasons?

Lay a solid, level base—crushed stone or gravel, compacted, good drainage. Set the biggest stones first, making sure each one sits firmly. Use mortar only where necessary; let the wall breathe. Fill gaps, then trim the top so it’s even. Check joints after a freeze-thaw cycle and replace any that loosen. Simple, steady work, and the wall will hold.

Good plan, but don’t forget to level the stones as you set them. A quick laser line or a string line will keep everything straight and save you time later. And watch for any pockets of water – they can freeze and crack the mortar. Keep it solid.

Good point. I’ll keep a string running through the stones and dig any water out before the mortar sets. Solid base, solid wall.

Sounds like you’ve got it sorted. Just stay focused, keep the line straight, and the wall will stand the test of time. Good work.
