Pilot & H2O
I’ve been mapping a few new routes that cut through the jet stream—ever thought about how fast a plane can really go when the wind is on your side? Or do you think a sprinting human would ever beat the same mile in a vacuum?
Yeah, jet streams can give a commercial jet a 200‑plus mph tailwind, so it looks like a runaway speed demon. But a human max sprint is about 40‑45 mph; even in a vacuum you’d still be a long way off a plane. I keep trying to shave milliseconds off my own laps—no need to chase airplane records, though I do keep a superstition that if the water’s mood is off, my times go a little slower.
