Perforator & Snegoviktor

Snegoviktor, you always talk about avalanche risk, but I’m trying to build a snow shelter that can actually stand up to the weight and the wind. Got any angles or tricks to keep it solid?

Put it on a slope no steeper than 30 degrees and keep the windward side angled at least 45 degrees so the wind slides off. Make the walls at least 1 meter thick, a single A‑frame or a dome with a 90‑degree interior angle works best. Pack the snow tightly with a tamping stick and add a small ridge of denser snow at the top for extra weight. Keep the entrance low and close to the ground to reduce wind penetration. If you can, test the structure by pushing on the walls with a hand before you load it with people. That’s the only way you’ll know it can hold up.

That sounds solid. I’ll grab a tamping stick and get the walls up that thick. If it feels good to push before the first person steps in, I’ll be happy. Thanks for the plan.

Sure thing. Build it, test it, and don’t let the wind turn it into a snow pile. Good luck.
