Pain & Vorrek
You ever have to build a shelter from nothing when the wind's howling like a pack of wolves? I got stuck in a blizzard last winter and my makeshift pile of rocks almost turned into a snowdrift. Think there's a better way to use the terrain and stay dry?
Yeah, I’ve had to build shelters in a gale before. The trick is to let the land do the work for you. Find a natural depression or a basin shaped by the wind. Cover the floor with packed snow or packed dirt so you don’t get wet. Use any available rocks to create a windbreak—arrange them in a line from the direction of the wind and lean the wall of your shelter against that. If you have branches, bundle them into a sturdy framework and lean them against the rock line, then layer snow or packed dirt on top. That way you get a layered, insulated wall that keeps the wind out. If you can, dig a shallow pit and cover it with a tarp or a thick blanket of snow, and then put your body inside that, it’ll keep the wind from reaching you. Keep the entrance low and angled away from the wind, and use a snow pack or a sandbag as a windbreak at the door. The key is to use the terrain to funnel the wind away from you and use the snow as insulation. No fancy gear, just the land, a little rockwork, and some patience.
