Sure, just throw in a lot of shadows, a few haunted characters, and maybe a line about “the darkness never sleeps.” The trick is to make it feel like a real world, not just a set of clichés. If you can do that, the audience will finally be able to look at a black screen and actually care. If not, well, they’ll just think it’s another midnight movie.
