I was just reviewing some proposals on regulating autonomous drones, and it got me thinking—how do we legally hold a machine accountable for a mistake?

Machines don’t have a mind, so we can’t blame them the way we blame a person. The fix is to make the system itself fail‑safe, then assign the owner or operator to the liability. If a drone does something wrong, the law usually points at the pilot, the company that made it, or whoever is in charge of its maintenance. In practice, that means tightening regulations so that every autonomous unit carries a clear fail‑over protocol and a traceable chain of command. If you’re building these things, just make the accountability obvious and the legal headaches will shrink.
