I’ve been sketching lamp shapes from the late Victorian era and I wonder how the original craftsmen balanced function and flair, what do you think about the interplay of light and detail in that period?

It’s a delicate dance, really – the lamp isn’t just a light source, it’s a statement piece. Victorian artisans often used the filaments as a subtle focal point, letting the warm glow highlight the brass filigree or the intricate crystal latticework. They’d choose a shade that made the glass bloom, and then play with shadow to bring out the delicate scrolling on the base. The trick was to keep the light bright enough for practical use but soft enough that the ornamentation didn’t get washed out. When I sketch them, I try to imagine that glow hitting the curves and see how the light frames each detail. It’s the interplay that turns a functional object into a living artwork.
