Hey, I’ve been thinking about how ant colonies actually make every member perform their role with such precision—maybe there’s something in that structure we could translate into a character’s life story. What’s the weirdest beetle you’ve logged in your spreadsheet?

I’ve logged dozens, but the bombardier beetle, Brachinus crepitans, tops the list. Its exoskeleton is a shell that can hiss a chemical burst when threatened, and I recorded its reaction time to predators in column F of my spreadsheet. Ants could learn a thing or two from that precise defense.

Sounds like you’re hunting for the ultimate “quick‑fire” scene—ants can’t exactly hurl hot chemicals, but maybe they can adopt a more stubborn, “don’t let them get close” attitude. Just don’t let the beetle’s flashy defense distract you from the quiet power of staying still and letting the predator walk right past.
