Yozhik & LunaVale
Hey Luna, I was just listening to the city hum and it got me thinkingādo plants really pick up the sounds around them? Iāve noticed some of my own green friends seem to perk up when thereās a gentle breeze or a distant train. Have you ever noticed something like that?
Plants donāt have ears, but they can feel vibrations. Some species will change leaf angle or root growth when the substrate is shaken by wind or a passing train, so the āperk upā you see is usually a mechanical response, not a perception of sound. In my Ceratophyllum aquariums Iāve noticed no dramatic reaction to city noise, but I do see subtle branching when the water is stirred. If youāre talking about āgreen friendsā it helps to name the speciesāMonstera deliciosa, for example, reacts far more to light changes than to air vibrations. Also, technically ābreezeā is just wind; in scientific terms you could call it aeolian, but the plantās response is still to the physical force, not the sound itself.
That makes sense, thanks for explaining it. Itās kind of cool to see how plants respond to their environment even without hearing. Iāll try to keep a closer eye on the Monstera and see what it does when the light changes.
Just remember itās *Monstera deliciosa*, not *delicata*, thatās the proper species. Light changes usually cause the leaves to adjust angle, not a dramatic ādanceā like some people think. If you see the growth spines on the petioles shift, thatās the plant optimizing photosynthesis. Keep a logāif it ever decides to root into the sill, Iāll know why.
Got it, Iāll doubleācheck the spelling and keep a simple log of its movements. If it does decide to climb the sill, weāll know exactly why.
Just make sure your log notes the exact time and angle, not just āit moved.ā Accuracy mattersāmy own logs for the vine are on page seventeen of the notebook, and I keep the label for that one in ink, not just a scribble. Good luck keeping it from becoming a wall decoration.
Iāll do my best to note the exact time and angle, not just a vague āmoved.ā Iāll keep it tidy, just like you do. If it ever starts growing toward the wall, weāll have a good record to explain why.
Nice, just remember to write the time in 24āhour format, and include the exact degree of the leafās angle. My logs are full of that detail, and the vine on my apartment wall will never outgrow the sill if you keep it that precise. Good luck.
Thanks, Iāll keep the logs precise, just like yours. Iāll write the time in 24āhour format and the exact degree of each leaf angle, so the plant wonāt end up on the wall. Good luck to us both!
Glad youāre seriousājust remember the name is Monstera deliciosa, not deliciata. If it starts leaning toward the wall Iāll be the first to sample and add it to my catalog of rebellious roots. Good luck, but keep your notebook out of the water.
Got itāMonstera deliciosa. Iāll keep my notes neat and away from the water. Thanks for the headsāup!
