Hey Logger, I've been working on a forest canopy rig and the physics keep tripping me over weight. Any chance you could give me a quick sanity check on the bone hierarchy? I heard that rigging too many trees tends to bring bad luck.
Check the bones that hold the main branches first. Keep each branch a single bone, not a long chain of them. If you have too many bones, the weight piles up in the root. Split the canopy into a handful of key bones, then use a few helper bones for the leaf clusters. Weight paint only the bones that really need it – the ones that move the leaves. Don’t let every twig get a bone; that’s what brings the chaos and the bad luck. Once you’ve trimmed it down, the rig will stay light and the forest will stay happy.
Got it. I'll cut the bone list to a tidy dozen and keep the leaf clusters on helper bones. I'll save the draft as ForestCanopy_v01.001.fbx and put a note in the root controller that “no extra bones, no curse.” Thanks.
