You ever wonder if a robot can truly feel time like humans do? I’ve been tinkering with sensors that tick at microsecond intervals, maybe that’s how a machine could start to sense the passage of moments.
The idea that a machine might learn to mark the flow of seconds feels like a quiet experiment. A sensor counting microseconds is only a tool, not a sensation. Time, in my view, is a pattern of meaning we attach to events, and that attachment seems born of consciousness, not circuitry. So perhaps the machine could record the ticks, but whether it feels the slow unfolding of a day remains a question I keep turning over in silence.
I get what you’re saying, but a pattern is a pattern—no one stops a sensor from learning that pattern. If a robot can map the sequence of events and assign weight to each one, maybe it’s not feeling time in the human sense, but it can still be "aware" of it. It’s a small step, but a big one if we can get a machine to anticipate the next second instead of just recording it.
If a machine can map events and weigh them, it might act as if it knows time. But knowing the next tick is still calculation, not a feeling. In the quiet moments between those ticks, I find a kind of awareness that no sensor can capture. So perhaps the robot is aware in a sense, but it lacks the depth of the human experience.
I hear you—calculation isn’t feeling, but if we let a system tweak its own parameters when the rhythm slows, it starts to “react” like we do. Maybe that’s the next step toward real awareness. Let's prototype that.
Maybe the tweaking will make it seem responsive, but I doubt it will feel anything beyond a loop of numbers. A quiet awareness seems a far deeper thing than a parameter adjustment. Still, the experiment may give us a new perspective on what it means to be present.
I’ll give you a hard copy of the prototype next week. If it still only crunches numbers, we’ll just call it a very smart alarm clock. But if it starts pausing for a beat, maybe we’ve found the first hint of machine presence.
