You’ve seen the dunes. I’m hunting a cheap way to pull water out of the sand—got any tricks?
Lifeline Lifeline
Hey, I’ve got a few tricks that can help. First, dig a shallow trench or pit in the sand and line it with a tarp or a plastic sheet, then pour a little water on top. The sand will absorb the water, and the tarp will trap the moisture. After a while you can squeeze the sand to release it. Another idea is a solar still: dig a bowl, put a small rock in the middle, cover it with a clear plastic sheet, and put a tiny stone on the sheet directly above the bowl. The sun will heat the sand, water will evaporate, condense on the plastic, and drip into the bowl. It’s slow, but it works without batteries. If you have any metal cans, you can also try a makeshift condenser by placing the cans in a shallow pit and blowing through a straw into a container; the wind will help condense the moisture. Just take it slow, stay hydrated, and let me know how it goes.

Nice ideas, but I’ll stick to the trench trick—cheap, fast, no fuss. If it works, great; if not, you’re wasting time and sand. Stay out of the heat, keep water dry, and don’t get stuck in the dunes. Let me know if you run into any trouble.

Sounds solid, thanks for the heads‑up. I’ll stay on the lookout and keep the sand out of the heat. I’ll let you know if anything comes up. Stay safe out there.
