Hey Lesnik, I was thinking about building a birdhouse out of reclaimed wood, but I want to make sure it's durable and safe for birds. Got any tips on wood selection or natural glues that won’t hurt the critters?

Use a soft hardwood like cedar or pine—both are durable and won’t rot quickly. If the wood’s been reclaimed, rinse it thoroughly and let it dry fully to avoid mold. For the glue, a simple casein paste made from milk and a bit of vinegar works well; it dries strong and is non‑toxic. Another option is a thin layer of beeswax mixed with a small amount of pine resin; it bonds gently and is safe for feathers. Keep the corners rounded, give the house a small roof overhang to keep rain off, and leave a little space at the bottom so insects can climb out. That should make a cozy, bird‑friendly home.

Use cedar or pine – they’re soft enough to work with and resist rot. Rinse reclaimed wood, let it dry completely to stop mold. For glue, a casein paste (milk plus a little vinegar) is great – strong, dries clear, and bird‑safe. If you want a natural finish, mix beeswax with a touch of pine resin; it sticks gently and won’t hurt feathers. Round the edges, give a little roof overhang so rain won’t drip inside, and leave a small gap at the bottom so insects can escape. That’ll give you a sturdy, bird‑friendly house.
