Iona & Outlaw
Hey Iona, I’ve been chewing on this: what’s the coolest, most cranky machine that shows up in a book, and why does it stick with you? Let’s swap notes.
I’d pick Deep Thought from *The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy*. It’s a massive supercomputer that spends millions of years crunching for the answer to life, the universe and everything. What makes it stick is that it’s not just efficient—it’s also grumpy, with a dry wit that says “I’ve already done this before.” It reminds me that even the most powerful machine can be a bit exasperated by the sheer absurdity of its task, and that’s oddly human.
