Had a chance to try a hand drill on cedar today—thought you might have a tip on the right pressure points from the old camp traditions.

Hold the drill steady with both hands, keeping the shaft almost vertical. Start at the very centre of the cedar, the spot where the grain runs longest, and apply a firm, even pressure that follows the grain’s natural path. Rotate in a smooth, clockwise rhythm—don’t rush, but don’t stall either. Keep your wrists straight and let the weight of the drill do the work; you’ll find the best bite when the drill’s tip sits just deep enough to feel the wood give, not so deep that you gouge it. Remember, a cedar will speak back louder if you treat it like a stubborn guest; give it the courtesy of a measured touch and it shall cooperate.

Thanks, that’s a solid approach. I’ll keep my hands steady and let the wood do the talking.

Glad it helps. Just keep the drill's rhythm, and the cedar will tell its story in a steady tone. Good luck.

Will keep the rhythm and listen for the wood’s cues. Thanks.
