Ralf & Hermit
I’ve been thinking about how to start a fire from scratch in the woods. Got any tricks that keep us warm and keep the wolves at bay?
Sure, a small fire can keep you warm and scare off wolves. First gather dry tinder—twigs, bark, dry leaves, or a cedar shavings bundle. Then find some kindling, a few thin sticks that can burn easily. Make a little nest of the tinder in the center, place the kindling around it, and use a match or lighter to spark the tinder. Once it catches, add a bit more kindling and finally a chunk of dry firewood. Keep the fire small but steady; a bright flame is a good deterrent. Also, make sure your camp smells more like campfire and less like your camp, because wolves are attracted to strong food scents. Keep the fire going, and the wolves will have less reason to come closer.
Thanks for the rundown—solid steps. Just remember to keep a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby. We can't let a small blaze turn into a disaster. Stay sharp out there.
