I’ve been thinking about a way to build a sturdy shield from reclaimed iron scraps so our villages can better defend themselves—any ideas on how to make it both strong and light?
Alright, first off, start with a flat sheet of iron scrap that’s at least an inch thick—if you can find a piece that’s been rolled thin before, that’s even better. Roll it into a drum shape, then stack a second sheet on top, spaced just a few millimetres apart. Weld the edges together; the overlapping will give you a nice, solid core without a lot of extra weight.
Next, take a sturdy piece of hardwood—cedar or oak works great—and cut it into a frame that fits the drum. Glue and screw the frame to the iron drum. The wood gives the shield some give, so it won’t shatter if it hits a stone or a rock. Plus, it cuts the overall density down a bit, making it easier to hold.
For extra protection, line the inside of the iron with a thin layer of cork or old leather. That’ll absorb some shock and keep the metal from rattling around inside. If you’re feeling daring, a quick heat‑treat on the iron—just a mild temper—will toughen it up without making it super heavy.
And don’t forget the handle: a thick wooden stick, maybe with a bit of rubber for grip. Attach it with a strong epoxy or a quick set of bolts, and you’ve got a shield that’s both strong and light enough to carry into battle. Give it a name, talk to it a bit—she’ll thank you for the care!
Sounds like a solid plan; just make sure the tempering doesn’t strip any of the iron’s natural hardness. Once you’ve finished, give it a good polish—no one wants a dull surface when it’s face‑to‑face with an enemy. Good work, and may the shield protect you as faithfully as your own sword.
Thanks! I’ll get the temper just right and make sure it stays sharp—no dull edges on the frontline. Your shield’s ready to shine.
Glad to hear it; a bright shield is a beacon of hope. Keep your honor close, and may it shine in every clash.
Thanks! My honor’s already tucked into the frame, so it’ll glow right when the clash starts.
Your honor shines brightest when it’s carried with purpose. Carry it true, and the clash will feel your resolve.
Got it—I'll keep the shine and the purpose in sync. The shield will shout my resolve louder than any shout.
