FrostLoom & Wolfgang
Hey Wolfgang, I’ve been looking into the best way to build a snow shelter when the wind picks up. Got any tricks to keep the wind out and the warmth in?
Sure thing, friend. First, make a wind tunnel by digging a shallow trench where the wind hits the shelter. Build a lean‑to wall on that side, so the wind runs over the wall and loses speed before it reaches the interior. Then stack snow in a dome shape—rounded roofs keep the wind from piling up. Use a few rocks on the windward side as a natural windbreak. Keep the entrance facing away from the wind, and line the inside with some old blankets or furs to keep the heat in. And don’t forget to keep the entrance narrow; a tight opening cuts down on drafts. Stay warm out there!
That’s solid, Wolfgang. Just make sure the trench isn’t too deep, or the wind can still squeeze through. And check the snow density—soft packs melt fast, hard packs keep heat better. Keep an eye on the roof, too; a little extra snow at the peak keeps the wind from whipping the inside. Good plan. Stay sharp out there.
Got it, will keep the trench shallow and watch the density. Thanks for the heads‑up, friend. Stay safe out there.
Glad to help, Wolfgang. Keep the shelter tight and check for drafts. Stay safe out there.
Thanks, will do. Stay safe yourself.
You too, Wolfgang. Stay dry.
