Finn, I've been thinking about how to keep a film shoot on schedule while still giving actors room to explore their characters—how do you balance structure and creativity on set?

I think of the schedule as a skeleton and the actors as the muscles that flex it, give them a clear beat, let them stretch, so they know where to anchor. Trust that the script will survive their improvisations, and if it doesn’t, we just shift the beat a little. That keeps the set moving, but lets the soul of the scene breathe.

That's fine, but any detour must be tightly controlled. If an actor strays, tighten the schedule—no room for guesswork. Keep the beat, keep the end line.

I hear you, but the story’s heartbeat doesn’t always stay in a clock—sometimes the best moments happen when the actors breathe a little outside the beat, and if we hold them too tight the whole scene can feel stiff. Maybe set a soft boundary, a clear goal, and let the exploration happen within that frame. That way the schedule stays on track but the creativity still gets its wings.
