Count the variables: how many casualties could the shortcut cause, how much ammo and fuel are needed, how long the safe route takes. If the time saved doesn’t give you a strategic advantage—like a tactical surprise or catching a retreating foe—stick to the safe path. Use a quick risk matrix: high risk, low benefit? Skip it. High risk, high benefit? Only take it if the team is fully briefed, has a contingency plan, and the commander’s orders allow for that bold move.
