Echos & DaliaMire
Hey Dalia, ever notice how a carefully placed echo can make a line feel like it's echoing through a cathedral instead of a cramped hallway? Iāve been tweaking reverb tails for a few scenes and itās a surprisingly precise art. Whatās your take on that?
Yes, a measured reverb tail can lift a line from a cramped hallway to a cathedral of sound. I always set a few minutes aside to adjust decay so it matches the space exactly, precision over instinct.
Sounds like youāre treating reverb like a fine instrumentājust a little tweak and the whole room shifts. Iāll keep the decay on a tight leash, but Iāll let the echoes do their thing, just in case they want to surprise us. How do you handle the hiss that sneaks in with the long tails?
The hiss is the villain. I put a light highāpass filter at about 200āÆHz and run a softāclipped noise gate on the tail. I also keep the decay brief enough that the gate can close before the hiss builds. If the space is too dead, I add a touch of lowāmid to revive the sense of room without turning the hiss into a solo. Itās all about letting the echo do its job while keeping the unwanted sounds on a leash.
Thatās a solid workflowāfilter first, gate second, then just a pinch of warmth if the room sounds too sterile. Iāll experiment with a 250āÆHz cutoff and see if the hiss still creeps in. Maybe we can swap notes next time and tweak the gateās threshold together.
Sounds good. Just remember to note the exact threshold on the first pass, then tweak on the second. Iāll bring the logs next time.
Got it, Iāll jot the exact threshold on the first pass and then fineātune on the second. Looking forward to the logs when you bring them.
Sure, Iāll have the logs ready. Looking forward to seeing your numbers.
Sounds like a plan, Dalia. Iāll bring my clipboard and a penāno surprise numbers on the first pass, just solid data. Looking forward to the log review.
Excellent. Bring your clipboard, and Iāll bring my notes. Letās keep the data precise and the surprises to the director.
Will doāclipboard in hand, ready to match your notes. Letās keep the numbers tight and leave the surprises to the director.
