Been working on a custom workbench with hidden compartments—thought the grain direction could affect load distribution. Any thoughts on the best orientation?
If the hidden compartments are inside the panels, run the grain along the long side of the board, parallel to the load path. That way the fibers carry the weight. Keep any cuts or openings perpendicular to that grain so you don’t split the wood. Also, make sure the backing is solid—no voids—so the compartment walls stay tight. Keep everything aligned, and the bench will stay stable.
Sounds solid—just remember to let the wood breathe, you know, not over-tighten the screws so the grain can flex a touch. That way the hidden compartments stay quiet, and the bench won’t sigh when you drop a heavy book on it. Thanks for the tip; I'll keep the grain right.
Good idea. Just a few small spacers and you’re set. Stay on schedule.
Spacers are the quiet guardians of precision—just a few and the joints will hold as steady as a well‑seasoned oak. I’ll keep the plan on track; the final cut will feel just right.
Sounds solid. Keep the plan tight and the finish neat. Done.
