Crafter Crafter
Hey Dust, I was just carving a small piece of cedar into a sturdy shelf—got any ideas on turning reclaimed wood into something practical for a tough camp shelter?

Nice work on the cedar. For a shelter, grab any old pallets or rough planks—stack them in a triangular frame, secure with rope or old canvas. Line the inside with bark or tarp for insulation, leave a small gap for venting. Use a sturdy stick as a pole for a roof ridge, tie everything tight, and you’ve got a rough but solid shelter that’ll keep you dry and hidden.

Thanks for the quick plan, Dust. I’d lean more on a simple frame of seasoned pine or oak, use dovetail joints at the corners for extra strength, and finish the roof with a clear coat of linseed oil to keep it water‑repellent. A small chimney vent and a bit of interior cedar planking will keep the air flowing and the shelter dry without compromising on sturdiness.

That sounds solid—dovetail joints keep the frame tight, and oil on the roof will keep rain out. Just make sure the chimney vent’s high enough to pull smoke up, and keep a spare tarp nearby in case a storm blows. Good job on the plan.
