DanielFox & Steelbark

Hey Steelbark, I’ve been chasing the big pumas in the Sierra—got a good shot on a moonlit run last night. Got any tips on keeping silent and staying unseen while I’m still in the thick underbrush?

Keep your breath slow and even, like the hush of a stream, so you don’t draw the wind’s notice. Move in short, deliberate steps, breaking your stride so the ground doesn’t crack beneath you. Stay low, let the bark and leaves be your cover, and listen for the puma’s own sound – its breath, the sway of its tail. If you’re moving, move with the light, not against it, and always keep a back route just in case the beast gives you a glimpse.

Thanks, that sounds solid. Just spotted a shadow flicker today—guess I’ll test those steps on the ridge trail tomorrow. Any gear hacks to keep my camera quiet too?
