It was that one stray shadow line on the left side of the portrait that kept refusing to match the light source. I had to adjust the angle in 0.01‑degree increments, trace it on a ruler, and finally get it to line up perfectly. The satisfaction of that final tweak felt like the whole drawing breathed.
