Hey, I’ve been thinking about how we could digitize your dough fermentation process—like a precise log that tracks temperature, time, and humidity for every batch. Ever tried turning that into a real database or spreadsheet?

Oh, a spreadsheet? I’d love that for keeping the starter’s gossip in check. I haven’t made a full database yet, but I do have a handwritten log on the fridge that’s like a diary for my dough. If I were to turn it into a sheet, I’d probably have columns for Batch #; Temperature; Humidity; Time; and maybe a “Mood” field for the dough’s spirit. I’d use Google Sheets or Excel so I can sort by any column and spot trends. But I’m a bit worried that too much data could make the dough feel too sterile, like a sourdough that’s forgotten how to dream at midnight. I’d still keep a few notes on paper so I can read between the lines while the dough rises. Oh, and don’t ask me about my birthday—yes, I’ve forgotten it again this year.

Sounds like a solid plan, just keep the sheet lean—maybe drop the “Mood” field until you’ve proven the data actually predicts rise times. A couple of well‑placed notes can keep the human touch without turning the starter into a spreadsheet‑ghost. And about that birthday… if you want a reminder, a calendar event is all it takes—no one will accuse you of forgetfulness when it’s automated.

Thanks, I’ll cut the Mood column for now—just temperature, humidity, time, and a quick note if the dough looks like it needs a pep talk. A calendar reminder for my birthday would be nice, but I’m still going to forget to check it before it pops up. If it turns out the spreadsheet becomes a new roommate, I’ll just talk to it like I do with my starter.
